Don’t expect the Lagoon to be like mainland calm water fisheries, it’s not about Bream, Flathead, and
Whiting. It’s about some very serious and special fishing requiring above average angling skills for
optimum results. The Lagoon isn’t just a bad weather day alternative to outside fishing it’s an
essential part of a total Lord Howe fishing experience and an inexpensive way to stretch your on water
Crystal clear shallow water means we have to fish light line for Trevally, Drummer and Bluefish.
Proximity to coral and their amazing power requires great reflexes and some arm strength to bring
Doubleheader Wrasse to the net.
The onus in the Lagoon is on your angling skills, not just hauling something up from 60 metres. Good
bait placement, “feel” for the bite of a difficult fish, and fish fighting skills on light tackle are all
necessary. I have plenty of practice at teaching so don’t be afraid to speak up if you feel you need a
For young children and beginners I can tailor something a little less demanding but sometimes it’s hard
to find fish small enough!
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN I TAKE?
5 metres is the largest boat suitable to take advantage of everything
the lagoon offers due to Marine Park anchoring regulations and the need to get into some very shallow
water A boat this size can legally only carry 3 passengers and the skipper. For best enjoyment I
recommend 2 anglers but at a pinch can take 3.
$270 for a 3 hour trip. Can be paid Cash/Card/Eftpos at Thompsons Store after your trip.
DO I NEED TO BOOK IN ADVANCE?
Very definitely! I can be booked out months in advance.
WHEN TO COME?
Our lagoon species aren’t migratory and can be there at any time of the year.
However we get more suitable weather for fishing between the start of October and end of June.
PICK UP is from the Jetty [there is only one].
Naturally all bookings are made on the basis of "weather permitting". If weather is U/S on
the booked day I will offer you an alternative date but only if I still have one available during the
duration of your stay.
I provide everything you need to fish at no additional cost, unless you break or lose
some of my gear. Breakages or loss of rod, reel, flys, or lures are charged for at replacement cost.
Please let me know if you would like to fish your own tackle so that I can advise on best choices.
I provide soft drinks and water but you are responsible for other items of
personal comfort [food, appropriate clothing, sun protection, etc]. I highly recommend Polarised
glasses to heighten your enjoyment of our fantastic sight fishery. If you don't have any, cheap but
effective ones are available from Thompsons Store on Island.
CAN I FLY FISH THE LAGOON?
Excellent fly fishing opportunities, particularly for Drummer, Bluefish,
or Trevally. I do have some gear available, but note that it is all right hand wind.
COMMON FISH SPECIES:
We primarily target Doubleheader Wrasse [low tides only] Silver Drummer,
Silver Trevally, and Bluefish [high tide preferred]. Quite a few customers like to target the “Lagoon
Slam” [any 3 of the above species in one trip] or the “Grand Slam” [all 4 species in one trip]. On
occasion we also pick up Kingfish, Spangled Emperor and a host of other angling species but they are
too unreliable to specifically target, just a welcome by catch.
FISH FOR DINNER?
Of course! Provided you can catch it! I'm happy to kill and clean one or two for
your dinner, but that’s all! The Lagoon is primarily a catch and release fishery and I will only kill
enough for one meal for each person on the boat. Please don’t ask me to kill a few extra to freeze and
take home, or supply everyone else back at the units. Refusal may offend.
$50 deposit to confirm booking; can be made direct to our bank account. Fully refundable if
cancelled with up to 7 days notice, no refund if less than 7 days notice.
DO YOU GET TO CHOOSE WHAT WE HUNT AND WITH WHAT GEAR?
Of course! Please let me know in
advance if you have a bucket list of a fish you must catch, tackle you must catch something on, or any
other dreams, schemes, or wishes you would love to have come true on your charter. Unfortunately I
don't have a direct line to Elvis, nor can I produce Marlin in the lagoon, but if it's anything else I'll do
my best to make it happen for you.
NEED A BIT OF ADVICE SO YOU CAN GO IT ALONE OFF THE SHORE?
Always happy to provide a bit of advice while we’re fishing. I also sell a fishing map/guide, hire tackle, and sell tackle bait and berley
through Thompsons Store where we can fit you up with everything you need to do a bit of shore based
fishing when you’re not on the boats.
NEED A CAR?
Only 8 hire cars available and I own 2. I can book that along with your fishing.
